Jack Robert Hardman

As singer-songwriter and producer Jack Robert Hardman gears up to release his debut single ‘Famous’, we spoke to him about his surprising first gig, musical inspiration and his ideal night out.

Do you remember your first ever gig? What happened?
My first solo gig was at a small wine bar in Basingstoke. I was first on the bill and the place was pretty packed. All I can remember was the look of shock on people’s faces! They didn’t expect such a high-pitched singing voice to come out of such a tall frame.

Tell us a bit about your single ‘Famous’ – what can we expect?
‘Famous’ is a really gentle little song. I wanted to create a very peaceful and warm track, while keeping catchy pop undertones throughout. That was the plan, anyway.

What are you most proud of about the single?
I probably enjoy the lyrics of the single the most. They flow really nicely and match the guitar quite well. It’s very difficult to keep a sense of progression in a song with so few instruments, so I’m really proud that people find something so simplistic interesting.

Is ‘Famous’ representative of the rest of your music as a whole?
In some ways it is and some ways it isn’t. There are certain lyrical themes that appear in a lot of my songs. Musically, each song is different. I like to explore different production ideas in each track I do, so no two songs will sound the same.

Tell us a little about your creative process – do you mull over an imminent track for ages or do you just get cracking?
I try and avoid mulling over songs. I think the idea behind any song worth keeping will come very quickly. I don’t mind spending a long time thinking about how to finish / produce a song, but I like to keep the inspiration behind songs quite natural.

How do you view mega-fame – is it something you aspire to?
No. I think in most cases mega-fame is a result of talent and success. I aspire to be successful and if mega-fame is a by-product of that then so be it. I would find it hard to motivate myself if mega-fame was the primary aim.

Finish the sentence: A good night out starts with...
Good music and drinking at someone’s house on the cheap before going out somewhere.

It ends with...
Any really good night has to end after 4am, otherwise I feel cheated. It would usually also involve really bad music and trying to finish off any drink that may be left hanging about.

It’s our round – what are you having?
Double vodka diet coke, please.

What comes first for you – sex or love?
I think it depends on the situation! Ultimately, everyone wants love. Sustained happiness is the dream.

What’s the best thing ever invented?
Probably the internet, knowledge is power. Now everyone has the power and they can have it in the palm of their hands.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Be kind to people on the way up because you never know who you’ll need on the way down.

Anything to add?
Not really. I am waiting for a Marks and Spencer delivery so I am listening out for the doorbell. Bet you’re glad we finished on a high note.
