The Feeling

by Bree Hoskin

14 December 2011

Hot on the heels of releasing their singles collection, Dan Gillespie Sells and Richard Jones from The Feeling chat to us about their career highlights, what they’ve learnt from their time in the music industry, the importance of the gay community and closeted celebs.

Stop or confirm (or start) a rumour about yourself...
Richard: I'm a herion addict. At least that's what Wikipedia once said!

Looking back, what advice would you give to yourself just starting out in the music industry?
Dan: Trust your instincts - you're presented with so many opinions on what you should do and be.  It took us a while to come to terms with that, but now we just do what we like.

Why did you decide to release the singles collection?
Dan: The Burberry advert is taking our music to parts of the world it's never been before, so we’ve put together a retrospective of some of our best moments for anyone who has just discovered us. Plus, we've been releasing records for half a decade now, which feels like something worth celebrating. It's definitely a collection of songs that we're very proud of.

Are you looking forward to your Christmas gig performances?
Dan: Yes, yes, yes - they are going to be so festive and fun. We always throw Christmas parties, but this is the first time we'll have let our fans in on it - we've got mince pies!

What can we expect from The Feeling in 2012?
Richard: We're going to be getting to work on the next album, so watch this space.

What’s one of your memorable moments from your career?
Richard: Wow, too many to mention, but playing the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury was pretty amazing.
Dan: Playing the Diana tribute gig at Wembley, they told us just before we went on stage that over a billion people were watching on TV!

Are you all still friends?
Richard: Of course. Dan and I have been working together for 16 years - we're like brothers.

You’ve got quite a big gay following – what does the support of the gay community mean to you?
Dan: I grew up in a gay community, so it's important that we have one and it is protected.

What’s your take on celebrities who won’t come out of the closet?
Dan: The same as I would say to anyone - just do it! If not just for yourself, but also for the rest of us.

What are you hoping Santa will bring at Christmas?
Richard: An aviation GPS.
Dan: A bell to call time at my pub.

Anything to add?
Richard: Happy Christmas GaydarRadio!
