Alex Ross-Iver
by Bree Hoskin
19 December 2011
Alex Ross-Iver’s music has been compared to everyone from The Human League, Vangelis and The Avalanches to Jean Michel Jarre and Basement Jaxx. Now, his music is set to be unleashed in the UK.
We caught up with the half-Russian, half-Georgian producer and singer-songwriter to find out what to expect.
So, when did you first realise you had musical talent?
I have played piano since I was five years old and have written music since the
age of 12. I have recorded and produced music since I turned 18, therefore I am
a true musician.
Who were your childhood musical heroes?
My childhood heroes are Bono from U2 and David Bowie, and my current favourite
musician is Beck.
"It all looks like a weird music lab now, and I like weird sounds and voices - my goal is to make it sound unusual and commercial at the same time."
What are the best words of encouragement you have ever received?
World famous musicians have said that my music is "very special" - I love to
hear this and it makes me feel proud.
Your music is being unleashed in the UK - what can we expect?
Well, I hope people in the UK need my special, weird, experimental music and pay
attention to my lyrics. I hope I'll make more records and sign new deals this
year. I'm one of few people from Russia/Georgia who are in the UK/EU music biz
now. This is good and I need your support.
Tell us a little about your creative process - do you mull over an
imminent track for ages or do you just get cracking?
"Just get cracking" is good for me. I use lots of midi, software, synth and
computers - it all looks like a weird music lab now, and I like weird sounds and
voices - my goal is to make it sound unusual and commercial at the same time.
"I'm a big fan of all music and artists like George Michael are incredibly important in my musical heritage."
So, do you think modern music owes a debt to gay culture?
I'm a big fan of all music and artists like George Michael are incredibly
important in my musical heritage.
Do you ever hit the gay clubs on a night out?
I'm not a big fan of any clubs in general.
Finish the sentence: A good night out starts with...
A good kiss from my girlfriend.
It ends with...
I go straight to bed 'cause I’m too tired when the party is over.
"I hope people in the UK need my special, weird, experimental music and pay attention to my lyrics."
What makes you happy?
Almost everything! I love internet for sure and I speak English every day now.
What makes you angry?
Almost everything! For example, there is no democracy in Russia.
What's the best thing ever invented?
Wow. I have no idea! My ezine where I promote MTV stars from Europe/US.
What are the future plans? What's the bigger picture for Alex
Ross-Iver?
MTV UK awards - why not? [Laughs]. Look, I just hope to be bigger in
the UK, sell more records and find new partners in the biz.
Anything to add?
Yes, please go to my website
