Stacey Jackson

by Bree Hoskin

18 November 2011

In her own words, "big hair, bling dresses, gorgeous backing dancers and fabulous dance tracks" are just a few of the things to expect from Stacey Jackson – and one of those dance tracks is her new single ‘Is This Love’.

We caught up with Stacey to chat about performing for a gay audience, what Pride means to her, working with Snoop Dogg, being imitated by drag queens and living the dream.

Stop or confirm (or start) a rumour about yourself...
Yes, there are drag queens that dress up as Stacey Jackson! In fact, one of my fans tweeted that he was going as me for Halloween!

Tell us a bit about your new single 'Is This Love' - what can we expect?
It's a cover of a Whitesnake song that was a hit in the late 80s, made into a dance track. Every time I perform it or it plays in a club, it brings down the house! I suppose it's because people are familiar with the song, but the beat just makes you wanna get up and tear up the dance floor!

"Yes, there are drag queens that dress up as Stacey Jackson! In fact, one of my fans tweeted that he was going as me for Halloween!"

What are you most proud of about the single?
That I can take a classic rock ballad from an era that inspired amazing rock music (and seriously big hair!) and translate it into a modern club track.

You've worked with Snoop Dogg - how did that come about?
I wrote a song called 'Live it Up' after my late father visited me in a dream and told me now was my time, I had to go out and live my dream! I wrote a verse for a rapper and we were running various names down a list when my manager suggested Snoop. We all thought he was nuts, but he said we should give it a try (he had done some work with him before and knew how to get the track to him) because I would be no worse off if he didn't like it. Snoop loved the song and loved what I was doing - five days later I was on a plane to the States to record with him!

What's in store for the crowd at a gig?
Big hair, bling dresses, mega high heels, gorgeous backing dancers and fabulous dance tracks.

You've performed at gay Pride events - what does Pride mean to you?
Freedom.

Finish the sentence: Gay audiences are...
Gorgeous, supportive and - most of all - amazing!

How do you view fame? Is it something you aspire to?
It depends on the kind of fame. If I can inspire people with what I do music-wise or otherwise and people respond to that positively, then fame is something that comes with it.

"Every time I perform it or it plays in a club, it brings down the house. I suppose it's because people are familiar with the song, but the beat just makes you wanna get up and tear up the dance floor!"

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
It's never too late to live your dreams!

Finish the sentence: You wouldn't know it, but I'm very good at...
I can draw intricate mazes in under 20 seconds -- I love drawing them for my kids.

I'm not very good at...
Cooking.

What are your plans for the single and beyond?
For the first time, I'm releasing in the US. In fact, I'm winding up a whirlwind tour after playing LA, Las Vegas and New York and running around from TV network to radio station! It's very intense and loads of work, but it's also very exciting for me. The tracks went down a storm in the States!

Anything to add?
The single was released on 15 November, available on iTunes! The video was recently the 44th most watched on YouTube.
