With a hint of Adele and a touch of Sheryl Crow, ‘It Hurts’ is the poignant and touching new single from Laura Comfort.

We spoke to the gorgeous singer-songwriter about channelling her emotions into her work, lesbian admirers and what to expect from her upcoming album.

Tell us a bit about your new single 'It Hurts' - what can we expect?
'It Hurts' is an intensely personal song that I wrote after my break up with someone I have been with most of my life. I've started a website www.ithurts.so so all women who have been hurt like me can share their stories and help each other.

Is the track representative of your upcoming album Don't Ignore Me as a whole?
On the album Don't Ignore Me I believe all my songs have thought-provoking lyrics and catchy melodies, but some songs are more melancholic and personal while others are more upbeat pop songs.

"I am very proud of this album because it was emotionally challenging to write and it increased my confidence as a songwriter."

What are you  most proud of about the album?
I am very proud of this album because it was emotionally challenging to write and it increased my confidence as a songwriter.

What's it been like to record?
Writing this album was a very cathartic process for me because it was during an emotionally difficult time and recording it was so exciting - I love seeing songs evolve in the studio.

So, when did you first realise you had musical talent?
My family encouraged me to sing from a very young age. My parents are both very musical and I was always asked to perform for family and friends.

Who were your childhood musical heroes?
During my childhood, I listened to Madonna, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac and James Taylor among others.

Lesbians seem to love female singer-songwriters - have you noticed a big lesbian following at all?
I think I have a few lesbian admirers on Twitter and Facebook which is very flattering.

"The best advice I've ever received was when I was 12 years old which was, 'Never lower your life to the level in which they live theirs'. In other words, always take the high ground."

It's our round - what are you having?
My favourite drink is a vodka Mohito.

What's the guiltiest pleasure on your iPod?
The guiltiest pleasure on my iPod is 'Candy Shop' by 50 Cent.

What makes you happy?
I am most happy when I am dancing, singing, listening to music, playing with my dog and hanging with friends and family.

What makes you angry?
I am most angry when I witness or read about cruelty to children or animals.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
The best advice I've ever received was when I was 12 years old which was, "Never lower your life to the level in which they live theirs". In other words, always take the high ground.
