Plot
How far would you go to win back the love of your life? Perhaps send
ostentatious bunches of flowers, write pain-strewn poetry or even sappily
serenade the object of your desire X Factor-style until they can take no more?
Paul (Benjamin Lutz), a hot but self-centered advertising exec, has more extreme
methods of recapturing lost love when his sensitive boyfriend, Brad (John
Werskey), leaves him when he realises Paul can’t remain “exclusive”.
Not used to losing out in matters of the heart and determined to get back with his ex, Paul decides to pretend to have cancer – yes, really – in what he sees as a idiot-proof way to ensure Brad’s dutiful return. But will this, frankly, crackers ‘masterplan’ work or will the tangled web Paul weaves get him into volcano-hot water with all around him rather than back in the arms of the man he supposedly loves?
Verdict
The Love Patient isn’t perfect. For a comedy the laughs are more
sporadic than consistent, plus the pacing is ropey on occasion. That said, the
film is big on entertainment, engaging turns and is crazily kooky enough to hold
the attention for an hour and a half. All that and there’s a fuzzily sweet love
story at the film’s core that will warm the cockles of anyone’s heart. An
impressive feature debut from writer/director Michael Simon, just don’t confuse
it with that drippy schmaltz-fest The English Patient.
