Plot
The setting is a Texas college, 1982, a time when big hair, loud
shirts and cowboy boots were considered the de-rigueur-darling! height of
fashion. Here, in the deepest, darkest redneck heartland, men are hetero men and
women are just future wives or current sluts. Most importantly, there’s nothing
remotely gay about nudge-nudge-wink-wink helping a mate out on the old
self-pleasuring front.
Good ol’ fratboy Kevin (Jacob Newton) is as straight as an arrow, that is if you don’t count his homo fantasies when shagging his girlfriend or jerking off his fellow frat bros. However, on meeting the cute, together and openly-gay Cesar (Derek Efrain Villanueva) he begins to see things a little more queerly. Can Kevin continue making out with his pal, Steve (Dylan Vox), in the belief that it’s just fratboy hijinks? Can a committed closet case ever admit the truth? And if he does will love blossom between Kevin and Cesar?
Verdict
Longhorns is, what is known in the trade, as a romp. OK, it ain’t
perfect; you can see the joins in some of the performances, some of the
direction clunks a bit and the humour is hardly what anyone could call
sophisticated. That said, it’s fun, funny, full of needless nudity and wears its
warm heart on its sleeve. Result.
