Tell us a little about The Love Patient – what can we
expect?
The short of it is my ex-boyfriend Paul, played by
Benjamin Lutz, devises this
ridiculous plan to win me back after we’ve been broken up for almost an entire
year once he finds out I’m dating one of our co-workers by faking that he has
been diagnosed with cancer.
What Paul doesn’t count on, as this crazy stunt of his unfolds, is that his family comes rushing to his aid bringing along with them all of their family drama. What seemed to be a simple solution to a simple problem becomes an overwhelming circus of events that takes the audience for a fun, silly and hilarious little ride as Paul tries to keep his plan, family and sanity from spiralling out-of-control. It's full of outrageous characters, sex, romance, laughs and shrooms. What more could an audience ask for?
"I've found it's much easier for me to act the more naked I am. Especially on stage."
What was it that first attracted you to the film?
A job! That's pretty much it. It's a numbers game when you're a young and
unknown actor in LA trying to make a mark, let alone get consistent work.
Tell us a bit about your character, Brad...
Brad is the heart of the film. He is the kind of guy who wears his heart on
sleeve. He's a very sensitive, professional man, as well as the hopeful
romantic. Brad's the type of guy who loves to be in love - at least, that's what
we were going for. I don't know, you tell me after you watch the film.
How similar are you to him?
In a lot of ways we're very much alike. I used to be a hopeful romantic. I used
to be the type of guy that loved to be in love, but then you live a little and
all of that transforms. Mostly for the better, though. I'm still very sensitive,
so there's hope for me.
Have you ever done something like the character Paul and lied to get
what you want?
All the time - every day when I bar tend or serve tables. I lie to myself that I
actually like what I'm doing had money not been the end goal in those instances.
Now, have I ever done anything as extreme as Paul before? No.
What was the most challenging scene for you to film?
Quite honestly the scene near the end of the film when I blow up on Paul was the
most challenging scene for me. Scenes where you have to become angry or enraged
are always the most difficult for me. Mainly because 99.9% of the time in my
life I'm always pretty damn mellow and easy going.
There’s a fair amount of bare flesh on display in the film – how do
you feel about getting your clothes off on film?
Fucking love it! Any chance I get to be naked on a project I take it - that is,
as long as it is for the sake of the story or character and not naked for the
sake of being naked. That's obnoxious! Although I've found it's much easier for
me to act the more naked I am. Especially on stage.
"My best asset, not that I believe it, but so people tell me, would be my eyes. They say they look trusting, but I say don't be fooled."
You’re a great looking guy. What would you say is your best asset and
if you could change one thing about your body, what would it be?
First of all, thank you, that's very nice of you to say. I'll tell my parents
you said, "Good job you two." My best asset, not that I believe it, but so
people tell me, would be my eyes. They say they look trusting, but I say don't
be fooled. If I had one thing to change about myself it would be pubic hair all
together. I just don't see a point in having it and, more importantly, it's a
pain in the ass to maintain. So I'd say rid my body of it all together. I'll
take my chances and look like an 8 year old boy down there for the rest of my
life.
How do you stay in shape?
Drink copious amounts of alcohol, mainly whiskey, and don't ever, ever, ever
eat.
Michael Stipe has described his sexuality by explaining that, for
every 10 people he is attracted to, 7 are guys and 3 are girls. How about you?!
First, I had to google who Michael Stipe is. Secondly, it's not that I don't
enjoy the music of R.E.M., I just don't know the band members by name. Thirdly,
those 10 people would all be women. Although, what straight man doesn't have a
man-crush on Brad Pitt? I mean, come on, he's the Pitt.
What comes first for you - sex or love?
9 out of 10 times it's sex. Love just takes a really long time to develop and
nurture. Not that it's not worth it every single time. It's just a more delicate
process. Both are extremely important to me when I'm in a relationship, but a
lot of it depends on your partner at the time too.
What do you think is the secret of a good relationship?
Well, I don't know what the secret is, but I can tell you that laughter, honesty
and a lot of great sex has worked for me in the past. So I think I'll continue
using that recipe until it no longer works for me.
Finish the sentence: A good film starts with...
A title - I like to know what I'm watching. Unless it sucks, in that case I'd
like to forget I ever saw it.
It ends with...
Credits - so I know when I can go home, take a piss, or turn off the DVD
player.
And finally, what’s next for John Werskey?
Later this month I begin filming The Shift starring Danny Glover,
written by Leonel Oliva and directed by Lee Cipolla in which I play a registered
nurse (RN) named Lee. This film is based on the real life and death experiences
of an RN. Pretty heavy material, should be a very powerful movie.
Cinemax, After Dark has a new original series called The Girl’s Guide to Depravity that I guest-star in airing Friday 24 February. I believe I'm in the 5th episode called 'The Bitch Rule'. It will be a year ago March that we filmed this, so I could be off on the episode number, but the title of the episode I'm sure of.
On 15 March a new original series airs on Showtime called The Girls of Sunset Place in which I am a series regular named Sage Rivers. Lots of sex, lots of beautiful sexy people, lots of drama. Everything one would want in a late night sex opera. Should be hot!
Finally, in April I’ll be in Hong Kong filming The Adventures of the Far Flung Star from writer Frankie Krainz and one of my favourite directors Steven Balderson. I’ve been following Steven’s career for quiet some time and it’s unreal that I finally get a chance to work with him. I can’t tell you enough how excited I am to work on this project. Not to mention visit and explore Hong Kong for the first time. 2012 has started off with a bang and I couldn't be happier. Looking forward to the future!
Thank you for this opportunity and I hope you all enjoy the film.

DVD: The Love Patient
An impressive feature debut from writer/director Michael Simon, just don’t confuse it with that drippy schmaltz-fest The English Patient.
